Spring Semester 2011

I’m two weeks into the new semester and am already feeling the pressure of juggling assignments and commissions! It’s good news though, I have plenty of work to do and it is all art related!

For sculpture studio I am attempting to make glass paper airplanes, which entails first making them out of clay, and then forming a mold, and melting the glass into the mold. The reason I chose paper airplanes as a subject are multiple, but mainly because I wanted to challenge myself, and also because paper airplanes are very nostalgic. I am finding that smoothing out clay to make it look flat like paper is indeed a challenge. I have a feeling I will be in the studio for many hours the day before these clay parts are to be finished.  For a 2D artist like me 3D symmetry is a challenge.

I am loving my exhibition class, where I get to work at the Covington Center and the rest of the art spaces across campus and downtown Radford. I am currently doing research for the VMFA art show which is on display in the Covington Center museum. I am learning quite a bit about artists I never knew of before and that is always a good thing. Sally Mann has particularly piqued my interest. She is a Virginia photographer from Lexington, who uses a nineteenth century technique to produce interesting atmospheric antique looking modern photos. That was a mouthful.

I’m also brushing up on my drawing skills, so I may post some of those when I have assignments completed. I haven’t taken a drawing class since I was seventeen so I could definitely use the practice. My art history class is also very interesting. I never tire of learning about what happened in art that brought us to where we are today. This class focuses on Eastern art pre-1800s.

As for my paintings, I am finishing up a sold piece now, and about to start a new landscape commission based on the Golden Gate Bridge. I recently wrapped up two commissions also, so I am definitely staying busy in that respect. Aside from those, I will be working on multiple projects for contest submissions, and also for personal enjoyment.

Thanks for reading!

Jessey

No Sleepy Time in Art Land

I found this image at http://ourroadcalledivf.blogspot.com/2009/07/you-thought-he-was-sleepy.html

Good afternoon readers!

As the semester at Radford University is finishing up I am more and more swamped with papers, projects, and exams, plus my own art show, separate from my formal education.  I think I’ve found a way to incorporate some of my sculpture pieces from class into the art show, but mostly I’m trying to make new pieces with inspired focus. It is difficult to focus, however, few precious hours of sleep, and specified studio assignments which can’t have much if anything to do with my current show.  Conundrum is a good word.

I am getting it done though, somehow, and I am glad you are on this journey with me! I hope to see you at the show on November 26!

Take Care,

Preparing for Nostalgia

I have finally settled on a title and theme for my upcoming art show at Lucie Monroe’s on November 26, 2010! Nostalgia will be full of friendly familiar images, to hopefully warm your hearts and excite your eyeballs. I’m sketching away tonight, and working on new paintings as fast as I can. I will be working up to the date, so keep checking back for updates on the newest paintings, and possibly sculpture!

Thanks for stopping by my lovelies!

Sincerely,

Jessey

New Shows, New Art

Hello everyone!

It’s been a while since I’ve had a new post, and I am very excited to say I have two new art shows coming up in November and December! I will be showing new art at Lucie Monroe’s in Christiansburg, Virginia, and I will also be traveling to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in December! I will be posting the dates when they are made official, so please check back!

I’m hoping to exhibit new portraits, and an acorn series! Hopefully I can get them all wrapped up in time. In the meantime, all of my old paintings are still here for your viewing pleasure! I will post new information as it comes to me!

Thanks,

Jessey

Gratitude, Work, and Coffee

I just want to begin this by saying thank you again to all of my clients. I’m glad I made something you liked, and I hope you enjoy your paintings for many years to come! I have had a flourish of sales recently and am very excited about it, however that means it’s time to get crackin’! I am beginning to understand that this is really a cyclic field of work. I always need pieces to sell, and a lot of them. There really is no time to waste!

I’ve already mentioned several times the paintings I’m working on now, so I won’t ramble on about those. I will be happy to get more new work out there. I still have several paintings on display at Lucie Monroe’s in Christiansburg.  If you haven’t been there, it’s definitely worth it to stop by, have a giant chocolate brownie and french pressed coffee, and check out the art! Dawn and Gary have been such wonderful hosts to my work there!

I’m also thinking of setting up some shows for the fall. I will keep you posted as I line those up.

Thanks for reading, and have a fantastic day!

XO

Jessey

Leaves and Feathers Stick Together

I love black and white, and when I painted it on the ostrich, I immediately wanted to do it again.  So, without further adieu, here it is.
